Fragmentation of exotic oxygen isotopes
Abrasion-ablation models and the empirical EPAX parametrization of projectile fragmentation are described. Their cross section predictions are compared to recent data of the fragmentation of secondary beams of neutron-rich, unstable 19,20,21O isotopes at beam energies near 600 MeV/nucleon as well as data for stable 17,18O beams
Enhanced Out-of-plane Emission of K+ Mesons observed in Au+Au Collisions at 1 AGeV
The azimuthal angular distribution of K+ mesons has been measured in Au + Au
collisions at 1 AGeV. In peripheral and semi-central collisions, K+ mesons
preferentially are emitted perpendicular to the reaction plane. The strength of
the azimuthal anisotropy of K+ emission is comparable to the one of pions. No
in-plane flow was found for K+ mesons near projectile and target rapidity.Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.Let
Low-energy cross section of the 7Be(p,g)8B solar fusion reaction from Coulomb dissociation of 8B
Final results from an exclusive measurement of the Coulomb breakup of 8B into
7Be+p at 254 A MeV are reported. Energy-differential Coulomb-breakup cross
sections are analyzed using a potential model of 8B and first-order
perturbation theory. The deduced astrophysical S_17 factors are in good
agreement with the most recent direct 7Be(p,gamma)8B measurements and follow
closely the energy dependence predicted by the cluster-model description of 8B
by Descouvemont. We extract a zero-energy S_17 factor of 20.6 +- 0.8 (stat) +-

Coulomb excitation of exotic nuclei at the R3B-LAND setup
Exotic Ni isotopes have been measured at the R3B-LAND setup at GSI in
Darmstadt, using Coulomb excitation in inverse kinematics at beam energies
around 500 MeV/u. As the experimental setup allows kinematically complete
measurements, the excitation energy was reconstructed using the invariant mass
method. The GDR and additional low-lying strength have been observed in 68Ni,
the latter exhausting 4.1(1.9)% of the E1 energy-weighted sum rule. Also, the
branching ratio for the non-statistical decay of the excited 68Ni nuclei was

International audienceThe majority function ⟨xyz⟩ evaluates to true, if at least two of its Boolean inputs evaluate to true. The majority function has frequently been studied as a central primitive in logic synthesis applications for many decades. Knuth refers to the majority function in the last volume of his seminal The Art of Computer Programming as "probably the most important ternary operation in the entire universe. " Majority logic sythesis has recently regained signficant interest in the design automation community due to nanoemerging technologies which operate based on the majority function. In addition , majority logic synthesis has successfully been employed in CMOS-based applications such as standard cell or FPGA mapping. This tutorial gives a broad introduction into the field of majority logic synthesis. It will review fundamental results and describe recent contributions from theory, practice, and applications
A Measurement of the Coulomb Dissociation of 8B at 254 MeV/nucleon and the 8B Solar Neutrino Flux
We have measured the Coulomb dissociation of 8B into 7Be and proton at 254
MeV/nucleon using a large-acceptance focusing spectrometer. The astrophysical
S17 factor for the 7Be(p,gamma)8B reaction at E{c.m.} = 0.25-2.78 MeV is
deduced yielding S17(0)=20.6 \pm 1.2 (exp.) \pm 1.0 (theo.) eV-b.
This result agrees with the presently adopted zero-energy S17 factor obtained
in direct-reaction measurements and with the results of other
Coulomb-dissociation studies performed at 46.5 and 51.2 MeV/nucleon.Comment: paper to be published in Phys. Rev. Lett. 3 figures. New Version

The Coulomb excitation of 208Pb projectiles has been studied at an
energy of 640 A MeV. Cross sections for the excitation of the two-phonon
giant dipole resonance were measured for different targets, and show clear
evidence for a two-step electromagnetic excitation mechanism. The experimental
cross sections exceed those calculated in the harmonic oscillator
approximation by a factor of 1.33 ± 0.16. The deduced 27-decay probability
is consistent with the expectation in the harmonic limit. Finally, the
excitation of the two-phonon giant dipole resonance in the deformed and
fissile nucleus 238U is discussed
"It doesn't do any harm, but patients feel better": a qualitative exploratory study on gastroenterologists' perspectives on the role of antidepressants in inflammatory bowel disease
Background: Interest in psychological factors in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has increased in recent years. It has even been proposed that treating psychological co-morbidities with antidepressants may control disease activity and improve quality of life. Despite this, there is no data on gastroenterologists' attitudes to, and experiences with, antidepressant therapy in patients with IBD. Methods: We conducted semi-structured interviews with 18 gastroenterologists associated with metropolitan teaching hospitals. Qualitative content analysis was used to examine their responses. Results: Seventy-eight percent of gastroenterologists had treated IBD patients with antidepressants for pain, depression and/or anxiety, and insomnia. Antidepressants were reported to be useful in improving psychosocial well-being, quality of life, and self-management of the disease by patients. However, in this group of gastroenterologists, there appears to be skepticism towards psychological disorders themselves or antidepressant therapy having a central role in either the causation of IBD or its clinical course. Nevertheless, these gastroenterologists were receptive to the idea of conducting a trial of the role of antidepressants in IBD. Conclusion: While the majority of specialists have treated IBD patients with antidepressants, there is considerable skepticism with regard to efficacy of antidepressive therapy or the role of psychological factors in the outcome of IBD patients.Antonina A Mikocka-Walus, Deborah A Turnbull, Nicole T Moulding, Ian G Wilson, Jane M Andrews and Gerald J Holtman
The High-Acceptance Dielectron Spectrometer HADES
HADES is a versatile magnetic spectrometer aimed at studying dielectron
production in pion, proton and heavy-ion induced collisions. Its main features
include a ring imaging gas Cherenkov detector for electron-hadron
discrimination, a tracking system consisting of a set of 6 superconducting
coils producing a toroidal field and drift chambers and a multiplicity and
electron trigger array for additional electron-hadron discrimination and event
characterization. A two-stage trigger system enhances events containing
electrons. The physics program is focused on the investigation of hadron
properties in nuclei and in the hot and dense hadronic matter. The detector
system is characterized by an 85% azimuthal coverage over a polar angle
interval from 18 to 85 degree, a single electron efficiency of 50% and a vector
meson mass resolution of 2.5%. Identification of pions, kaons and protons is
achieved combining time-of-flight and energy loss measurements over a large
momentum range. This paper describes the main features and the performance of
